Varkiza, is a photo series which tells the story of the everyday lives of fishermen and women and the effect the economic and environmental crisis has had on the lives of those bound by their reliance and love of the sea.
I called the project Varkiza, because that is the name of my grandfather’s town. There, I was captured by the openness of the fishermen and the simple yet laborious life they led. Most were fishermen since they were children; going out with their fathers who once went out to sea with their fathers. They said they felt at peace at sea, that it is an intrinsic part of their lives. However, faced with the economic crisis, fish shortages and constant damage to their equipment they are struggling to survive on what they know best.
